Ujjivan sets up reservoir for underprivileged in Kolkata

Kolkata, 3rd November, 2011: Ujjivan Financial Services, a leading urban microfinance institution today set up a concrete water reservoir at Vidya Bhavan Primary School at Kasba and also presented two water purifiers to the underprivileged students at “Children of Topsia” School, as part of its national Social Development Program.

The 400 students of the primary school till now had been suffering without proper access to drinking water. The ‘Children of Topsia’ school is run by a Spanish NGO and has over 180 underprivileged children from the locality.

At a function today, IGNOU Coordinator and former Headmaster (Kasba Jagadish Vidyapeeth), Mr. Bansi Badan Chattopadhyay, unveiled the water reservoir in presence of teachers and students of the institution. He also presented the water purifiers to the teachers of ‘Children of Topsia’ school.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Chattopadhyay said, “People in Topsia are primarily workers with below average income, so providing education to five children in one family becomes a difficult task. A majority of the children drop out of school even before they reach Class V and lack of basic facilities affects the morale of students and parents. I am happy that in addition to financially helping the underprivileged, Ujjivan is also encouraging education for the poor children by providing basic school infrastructure”.

One out of every two children in Topsia does not have access to education.

Ms.Manju Nandy, Distribution Manager-Ujjivan said, “Ujjivan has a holistic approach to poverty alleviation which requires more than just financial services. Our Social Development Programs are an integral part of our mission. Our customers know that quality education is the key to climb out of poverty and it is they who suggest urgently needed child welfare projects in the community and these are entirely funded by Ujjivan”.

Ujjivan conducts Social Development Programs to serve communities where branches are located. It allocates a portion of profits, empowering customers and the branch team to undertake local community development activities of their choice, preferably to support children welfare.

Last year, under this initiative, Ujjivan covered 92 branches investing over Rs.21 lakhs for over 34000 beneficiaries across India. In West Bengal, the program has been conducted in 15 institutions, benefitting nearly 5000 children. This year Ujjivan will invest over Rs.10 lakhs to carry out the programs at 41 branches in the state.
