Operational Model

Operational Methodology

Ujjivan works in a hub and spoke model, by which each city of operations has a central office for processing, technology and administration. There are branch offices set up at the field level that are primarily responsible for all customer interaction- selling and servicing. We use the factory concept for the centralised processing of all data recording, transaction processing, preparation of reports and document storage.

Our objective is to use the highly efficient operation, technology and processes of modern retail financial institutions to ensure capacity building and economies of scale. Complete operational support is given to the front-end team to function at their optimum capacity.

Through this model Ujjivan can achieve greater economies of scale as it services such large customer growth, standardized procedures, tighter controls on branch activity, centralized-objective Credit approvals, and real-time information gathering, while a greater freedom is extended to the branches to focus all efforts on the customer. For this reason, Ujjivan can offer a wide variety of products and services to its customers.

Operational Goals
Ensure standardization, accuracy, effective staff functioning, monitoring, supervision and     management.
Maintain an efficient, scalable and basic service quality operations processing center.
Excel in the following operational functions:
         • Data entry
         • Transaction processing
         • Maintenance of customer records
         • Control systems to ensure regulatory compliance and auditing of processes.

Information Technology

Strong IT infrastructure is the backbone of Ujjivan’s ability to effectively deliver financial services to the unbanked poor. The Ujjivan branch network is able to access the core mf module at the regional offices with ability to upgrade connectivity as desired based on our future requirements. Networking is achieved in a cost effective manner using broadband connectivity and UTM devices. Ujjivan also promotes the use of cost effective open source software as feasible. Ujjivan follows ITIL standards for its IT processes and ensures quality hardware and software management.
Ujjivan’s technology partner is Craft Silicon- a Kenya based software solutions provider     focused on the microfinance sector.
Core solution is Craft Silicon’s Banker’s Realm – Mfo, an enterprise system designed with     DNA architecture to support multiple delivery channels like ATMs, Smart Cards and     Handhelds.
The software is considered to be scalable to meet our current and future needs.
Centralized back-end operations: unique amongst MFIs in India
Future plans around further strengthening the IT infrastructure include:
         • Deployment of wireless handheld devices to automate field operations
         • Centralized information technology setup for each region of operation. This would include
standard technologies, guaranteed service levels and high quality support for all             departments
         • Centralized document management system for an efficient Operations environment
