Swati Jyoti Visits Ujjivan to Research Providing Financial Services to Sex Workers
This September Swati Jyoti, an organization working to reduce HIV/AIDS among sex workers in
Bangalore, visited Ujjivan’s Head Office. During the visit, they learned about how microfinance can play a role in the cooperative society that they are setting up for their members. When Swati Jyoti begins providing financial services to their customers, they will be the third financial institution in India serving sex workers.
“Thanks for the opportunity given to us to see the MFI operation in your organization,” said Balakrishnan of Swati Jyoti. “…[O]ur team members are very happy about the visit to your office [where they were] able to interact with Jakkasandra Branch staff and Ujjivan Head office staff in different departments. They [saw how microfinance] could…relate with their cooperative society…how they need to plan and what kind of documentation is required at each stage.”
Ujjivan aims to serve the poorest and most marginalized segments of India with financial services, and is committed to information sharing and collaboration with other organizations to achieve this goal.
