Ujjivan enters Lion State: Launches operations in Gujarat
Ujjivan launched its Gujarat operations on 19th June 2010. Ms. Krishnaba R Dabhi, Police Inspector (Women’s Wing), Surat, inaugurated the first Ujjivan branch in the state by disbursing the first loans to a group of five women. With this launch, the company expanded its operations to eighteen states in the country.

At the launch Mr. Samit Ghosh, Founder & CEO, said, “Gujarat is an economic giant and has been driving positive change in the country. Ujjivan has an all-round approach to lessening poverty and we will work with the urban poor, providing them opportunities to come out of poverty and play their role in the state’s financial success”.

The industrial workers and the other urban poor of Surat have been ignored by the banks and more formal sources of financing. Inaugurating the branch, Ms. Dabhi said, “Surat is Gujarat’s economic capital and attracts labour from all over the country. Apart from being a source of finance, Ujjivan's programs will bring financial literacy and discipline to women and encourage the habit of saving which would help lift them and their families out of poverty”

“We have over 3100 employees across the country. Our presence in Gujarat will not only help uplift the financially disadvantaged in the state but also create many job opportunities in the cities and towns where we will work”, said Jolly Zachariah, Chief Operating Officer (West).

Several media personnel attended the inauguration. Ujjivan plans to open another 30 branches state-wide soon in other urban centres such as Navsari, Baroda, Ahmedabad and Rajkot.

Ujjivan hopes to reach out to at least 100,000 low-income group women and their families in Gujarat.
