Parinaam conducts Health Camp for Urban Ultra Poor Beneficiaries
Parinaam launched the Urban Ultra Poor Program (UUPP) pilot in September 2009 in Bangalore. The program targets vulnerable families who are economically weaker than the typical customer served by microfinance. The pilot has been started with 60 families in a slum near old Bypanahalli. The UUP program is unique in that it is not purely woman centric and the interventions planned include all members of the family. The program will support the needs of the selected beneficiaries with respect to livelihood development, healthcare, financial support, social development, child care and children’s education.

Parinaam conducted the first health camp for the UUPP beneficiaries on November 1st, 2009. The camp screened members for general, eye, ENT and dental problems. Doctors

from Vittala Eye International, KIMS, Divine Specialty Hospital and the Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) provided consultation services. There were approximately 40 medical personnel including doctors, technicians and nurses present through the camp which ran from 9AM to 1.30PM. Ujjivan staff from the HAL branch served as volunteers providing critical support to the Parinaam team. Alcoholics Anonymous, a support group for people with alcohol addiction problems, was also on hand to counsel members and their families. At the end of the medical check up each woman was provided with a nutritious vegetarian meal package for the entire family and this was appreciated by all the attendees.

The camp was attended by 59 women, 18 spouses and 107 children. The screening at the camp reiterated Parinaam’s emphasis on healthcare as almost every patient needed some form of follow up treatment. Doctors also found that approximately 50% of the children were malnourished. The Parinaam team is now ensuring that appropriate follow up care is being done for all the beneficiaries. All treatment will be provided by Parinaam free of cost to the families.
