Inspiration and goodies for Pune anganwadi children
Padma Bhushan Shobhanatai presides

The first Social Development Program in Pune this year was a memorable one for the residents of Tadiwala Road area. Over hundred children, their parents, teachers from 10 anganwadis (child day-care centres) and other customers attended the function in large numbers. Education kits, toys and other goodies were provided to children and teachers of the anganwadis.
The program was conducted in support of the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of India. We were also supported by the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Society and Mrs. Shobhana Ranade, its 86-year-old noted trustee secretary and Gandhian. She has dedicated over half a century of her life for women empowerment and child welfare, and was conferred the Padma Bhushan earlier this year, the country’s third highest civilian honour.
Shobhanatai, as she is fondly addressed, went to hear Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 at the Aga Khan Palace, Pune and it was a turning point in her life as a young woman. “Live fearlessly,” were two words with which the Mahatma had blessed her... two words that have become a guiding force for Shobhanatai.
Her powerful and inspiring words at the function made this social development program a special one for the women and children gathered and for all others from Ujjivan. She spoke of the importance of hard work, honesty and sincerity, addressing the children as the future of India. She also donated toys on behalf of the Society.
